Two top six results and fastest lap for Academy Motorsport
Academy Motorsport’s Jordan Albert and Matt Cowley navigated their way through tricky conditions at Donington Park last weekend (15th – 16th August), to claim two solid results from the second round of the British GT Championship.
Dry conditions on Saturday gave both drivers the chance to learn how the Ford Mustang reacts to the Donington Park circuit. Despite a limited amount of time in car so far, both Albert and Cowley were immediately on the pace.
Lining up on the grid in third place for the opening two-hour endurance race, it was Cowley who controlled the first stint. In wet conditions, and with limited visibility, Cowley raced his way through the first hour, as he chased down the GT4 machines in his sights, enjoying close battles along the way.
As the pit window opened, Cowley handed control over to Albert, who proceeded to challenge for a podium position. Although narrowly missing out on third place, the team collected a strong fourth place finish. Demonstrating the strength of the Ford Mustang in difficult conditions, they also recorded the fastest lap in the GT4S Class.
In an unusual yet exciting change to the race format, the second race was a one-hour sprint. This time it was Albert who took the start, as Academy Motorsport chased down another potential podium finish.
Faced with wet conditions once again, Albert and Cowley navigated their way to another consistent top six result, with fifth place this time around.
Looking back over the weekend, Academy Motorsport’s Managing Director, Matt Nicoll-Jones, said: “It’s been a good weekend for us. We’ve demonstrated once again we have the pace. It’s great to secure two solid top six finishes, and we’re so close to a podium finish. We’ve just got to keep pushing.
“Matt and Jordan are doing a great job, especially considering the lack of time they’ve had in the car this year.”
There’s little rest before the next round, which takes place at Brands Hatch in less than two weeks time (29th – 30th August).
