A Monumental Donington Decider for Academy Motorsport

Academy Secures The Championship Win At Donington Park

Following a successful race win at Brands Hatch for car 61 driven by Erik Evans and Matthew Cowley, Academy Motorsport had done well for themselves leading to the Donington Decider. However, they were still going to need to run a perfect race in order to secure the British GT Championship.

After an intense qualifying, Academy’s cars ended sixth and seventh, with car 62 driven by Matt Nicoll Jones/Will Moore right behind car 61 driven by Erik Evans/Matthew Cowley. Initially a little disappointed with their results, the team remained optimistic that their cars had more to give in the sunny and dry conditions for the race.

Facing a stack of penalty time, 20 seconds from Brands Hatch of race winning compensation time and 26 seconds for the Silver/Silver driver combination, Evans and Cowley had quite the challenge ahead of them, but they remained confident in their vehicles, their team and preparation.

Determined to deliver their all, Evans and Cowley hit the track full throttle and managed to produce not only an incredible drive, but a victorious championship win for Academy Motorsport. Family and friends of the driver pair watched with Evans in anticipation and excitement as Cowley steered the car to victory. Car 61 overcame a 16.5- point deficit and 46 seconds of extra pitstop time in the showdown of the season at the Donington Decider.

“British GT4 Champions,” a title that seemed unlikely in the middle of the season, was fought for and earned by the Evans and Cowley driver duo. And Evans himself earned the laudable title of “International Race Winner and Champion,” a win paid for with the hard work of the entire team.

Academy Motorsport has much to celebrate in the off season and with the 2024 season kicking off in a few short months, the entire crew is fueling up for another exciting and winning season.
