Erik Evans got his title defence off to a solid start!
Reigning British GT4 champion Erik Evans got his title defence off to a solid start in the 2024 season-opening races at Oulton Park, Cheshire, on Easter Monday. Conditions for Academy’s new model Mustangs, out in their British race debut, were atrocious as heavy rain moved in to make the first race more about finishing than winning. Evans’ drive was well-measured with new teammate Marco Signoretti bringing the number 61 Ford Mustang home to a GT4 Silver class championship third-place podium finish. On the other side of the Academy garage Will Moore had bad luck with car 62 after a spin into the muddy outfield ended his run.
The second race of the day also started under wet track conditions which removed car 62 from the running at the first corner, after Academy Team Principal Matt Nicoll-Jones was caught up in an unavoidable collision. Signoretti demonstrated his Mustang experience by taking car 61 up to 6th place and overcoming the Silver class pit stop time addition before handing the car over to Erik Evans. Much of Evans’ drive was run under a full course yellow flag for track repairs. Even so, he made the fastest lap of the GT4 class and retained 4th place in the Silver driver category.
Their combined haul of points puts Evans and Signoretti 4th in GT4 Silver, 5th in GT4 overall after two races. Academy are a solid 5th in the GT4 Teams points table. That will provide a firm base for the upcoming, double-points endurance round at Silverstone on April 28th.
