Challenging end to the season for Academy Motorsport

The 2020 British GT Championship came to an end for Academy Motorsport at Silverstone last weekend (7th-8th November). Following a thrilling three-hour title showdown, the team came away with a strong end to its 2020 campaign, despite missing out on GT4 title honours.

During what has been a difficult year for us all, the team has shone throughout the shortened British GT battle, with highlights including victory at Brands Hatch, multiple fastest laps, pole positions and a chance to secure the GT4 Championship title.

After a strong qualifying session from both Matthew Cowley and Will Moore, the pair secured a third place start for the final race of the season.

With three hours of racing ahead of them, the team prepared for an exciting end to its title campaign. Sadly, after sustaining damage in the early stages, it presented a difficult challenge, but they refused to sit back and accept defeat. With a long race ahead, the team buckled down and raced to another solid top 10 finish. Matt Cowley eventually secured fifth place in the GT4 driver standings, whilst Academy Motorsport claimed fourth in the GT4 team standings.

Looking back over a strong season, Managing Director, Matt Nicoll-Jones, said: “It’s been an eventful season, for many reasons. Obviously Covid-19 put an extra level of stress on our season, so to get to the end of the year with six rounds under our belt is great. To come away with the achievements we’ve secured this year is brilliant, especially given our lack of testing time with a car that was new to us, but the Ford Mustang has been superb all season, and Multimatic have been outstanding, it’s been great to work with them.

“Matt has performed brilliantly all season. It’s a shame we had a driver change part way through, but Will slotted in perfectly, despite a lack of time in car.

“To be in with a chance of securing the championship title, especially under the circumstances, was a brilliant achievement by the whole team. Now we’re fully focused on and looking forward to 2021.”

Academy Motorsport are beginning to test drivers ahead of next season, for both its British GT Championship and GT4 European Series programme. Interested drivers should contact the team directly:
